Cerebral
Palsy

It is an umbrella term, which involves cerebral disorder of motor movement and posture that may or may not be progressive in nature. It can be associated with other conditions such as intellectual disability, epilepsy, visual impairment, or hearing impairment but can exist as a standalone condition too.
Previously, lack of oxygen (asphyxia) during birth was reported to be the etiology for CP but recent studies show that it can also arise because of combined insults to the brain during the child’s development (Paul, S et al., 2022). A study states that one of the reasons that affect the central nervous system of the fetus later during the gestational period which might lead to CP is the mother’s health before conception (Paul, S et al., 2022)

Individuals with CP will commonly have:

Locomotor abilities
Fine motor and gross motor issues
Postural and gait problem
Swallowing difficulties
Speech impairment
Visuospatial impairment

The common types of CP are:

Spastic (unilateral/ bilateral)
Ataxia
Dyskinetic
Mixed
An individual with cerebral palsy, post neuroimaging procedures and diagnosis, will undergo a detailed evaluation of muscle tone, motor skills, control of joint, postural, balance, and gait along with intelligence, speech, language, communication, swallowing, and audiological examination. Based on the deficits in each domain, the therapy will be customized and enforced in an interdisciplinary manner. Contact us to know more
